History of Valentine's Day
Crazy it may seem having just got through Christmas, but already we have started looking towards Valentines Day; one of the biggest days of the year for many jewellers and florists. But where did Valentine’s Day come from?
There were actually at least three Saint Valentines in religious history, but our favourite is that of a young Priest in third century Rome. The Emperor at the time decided that young men without wives or families made better soldiers, and outlawed marriage for his troops. Saint Valentine conducted many marriages for soldiers in secret, spreading love against the young men and women in the City.
Unfortunately, he died for his efforts, but the legend of St Valentine is stronger than ever today, with over 150 million Valentines sent annually.
